The light at the end of the tunnel? I've been using Pattern Play by Akiko & Forrest Kinney for only two weeks now, and I have to say I love it! It's a unique and fresh approach that opens the world of improvisation as totally accessible to every skill level. The jury's out on how well this will work in the long-run, but so far its really great. I'm encouraging my piano students to use as a basis for composing their own original compositions and hope to post videos in the future. Now I'm rather curious about their  Chord Play series.
